Apple Pays Out $95 Million in Siri Eavesdropping Settlement
What Happened?
The settlement stems from a 2021 lawsuit filed by Fumiko Lopez, a California resident who owned several Apple devices. Lopez and other consumers alleged that Siri was sharing their private or confidential conversations with third-party businesses, which then targeted them with ads in Apple search and its Safari web browser. Apple denied the allegations, stating that it did nothing improper or unlawful.
Who's Eligible for a Payout?
Apple customers who filed claims through the settlement website between May and July last year are eligible to receive a payout. The amount depends on how many Siri-enabled devices they included in their claim, with a maximum payment of $40 per device. According to social media posts, Apple customers report receiving an average of $8 per device.
What Devices Are Eligible?
The payout includes Siri-enabled devices such as iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs. Claimants were able to submit claims for up to five devices.
How Will I Receive My Payout?
People who entered a claim and submitted their banking information will receive a deposit under the name 'Lopez Voice Assistant' or 'Lopez Voice Asst—Payouts.' Claimants were also able to request a physical check, which would arrive through the mail.
