Buddhist Monk Embarks on 15-Week Peace Walk from Texas to D.C.

Buddhist monk who led 15-week peace walk to D.C. tells CBS News peace "always begins from within"In a remarkable display of dedication and compassion, Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara led a group of Buddhist monks on a 15-week peace walk from Texas to Washington, D.C., spreading a powerful message of mindfulness, inner peace, and unity. The journey, which covered over 2,300 miles, culminated in the nation's capital on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, after 109 days of walking through treacherous weather conditions and overcoming physical challenges.

A Journey for Peace
The peace walk was a mission to raise awareness about the importance of inner peace and mindfulness in achieving world peace. Pannakara, who serves as vice president of the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas, embarked on this journey with 19 Buddhist monks from various temples across the United States and abroad. The group's message was clear: 'Peace always begins from within.'

Overcoming Adversity
The peace walkers faced numerous challenges during their journey, including freezing temperatures, injuries, and even an accident that required one of the monks to undergo amputation. However, Pannakara emphasized the importance of mindfulness meditation in dealing with tough conditions: 'We practice mindfulness meditation while we walk. The more you focus on the breathing... it will generate energy for us to walk.'

A Message of Hope
The peace walkers received overwhelming support from the public, both physically and digitally. Thousands of people cheered them on as they arrived in Washington, D.C., while millions more followed their journey through livestreams and social media updates. Pannakara noted that the responses suggested the message of their mission – to 'raise the awareness of peace' – was received loud and clear.

A Message of Hope
When asked if peace can be achieved in a broken world, Pannakara replied with conviction: 'It is possible.' His words serve as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, we have the power to create positive change. The Buddhist monks' peace walk is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for compassion, resilience, and determination.

The 15-week peace walk from Texas to D.C. was a remarkable journey that spread a powerful message of mindfulness, inner peace, and unity. As Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara so eloquently put it: 'Peace always begins from within.' May his words inspire us all to strive for a more peaceful world, one step at a time.
