Reggae Got Soul
From the early 1960s, and even before that, it was not uncommon in Jamaica for artists to record their own versions of songs by US performers. Not surprising, since these songs were extremely popular on the island, as the early sound system pioneers imported soul, r&b and pop records from the US. In this book we try to trace the origins of many of those covers and their performers. Due to the overwhelming quantity of covers, we have restricted our selection to songs within the Black Music genre
