Pokrovsk Under Siege: Ukraine Reports 150,000 Russian Troops Deployed to Break Donetsk Defences

🚨

Kyiv, Ukraine—The battle for the strategic city of Pokrovsk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region has escalated to a critical level, with Ukrainian military leaders claiming Russia has concentrated an estimated 150,000 troops in the area in a major push to seize the city and the wider Donbas region.1

The massive troop deployment was revealed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, in an interview, where he stressed that Pokrovsk remains a key target of Russia’s current strategic offensive operation.2

Russia's 'Final Gambit' for Donetsk

General Syrskyi confirmed that out of Russia’s total estimated force in Ukraine, a significant portion—around 150,000 soldiers—has been deployed to the Pokrovsk direction, backed by powerful mechanized groups and four marine brigades.3

"The situation on the front line is really a tense one, where the enemy is carrying out a strategic offensive operation," Syrskyi stated.4 "They've collected most of the forces, creating domination in an attempt to breach our defense line... to capture the area."5

He described Russia's goal as an attempt to encircle Pokrovsk and neighboring towns from the north, south, and east, effectively choking off Ukrainian supply lines as part of what he called their "latest gambit" to capture the entirety of the Donetsk region.6

Fierce Street Fighting and Conflicting Reports

Despite the massive Russian force, Ukrainian forces insist they are holding firmly to the logistically important town.7 Reports from the ground indicate intense, close-quarters street fighting:

  • Ukrainian Denial of Fall: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and military spokesmen have strongly denied Russian state media claims that Pokrovsk has fallen or that Ukrainian troops have been encircled.8

  • Logistics Challenge: Ukrainian drone operators fighting near the city report that the situation remains critical, with Russian drone activity making logistics and resupply extremely difficult.9

  • Slow Russian Advance: While Western military analysts, including the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), confirm that Russian forces have recently advanced into Pokrovsk's southern and eastern outskirts, they note the progress remains slow and costly for Moscow.10

Pokrovsk, which had a pre-war population of about 60,000, has been contested for over a year and serves as a vital logistics hub and a gateway to the larger Ukrainian-held cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.11 Its fall would represent a significant symbolic and military victory for the Kremlin.

The intense fighting underscores the critical nature of the Pokrovsk front, which military analysts view as one of the most active and dangerous sectors of the entire war.
